The Pennsylvania Department of Health has announced important updates to the state’s Naloxone Standing Order, effective May 8, 2025. After thorough review and consultation with stakeholders including law enforcement and emergency services, Secretary of Health Dr. Bogen has authorized several key changes to improve overdose response options.
Key updates include:
- Addition of 3mg naloxone nasal spray to the standing order
- Implementation of a tiered system that guides users toward the most effective overdose reversal options while maintaining access to all medications
This update is part of the Department’s annual review process that evaluates new and existing opioid reversal medications based on patient safety and product effectiveness. Importantly, this update does not remove any medications from the standing order or make them unavailable.
The Standing Order ensures that Pennsylvania residents at risk of experiencing an opioid-related overdose, or those in a position to assist them, can obtain naloxone without a prescription.
Remember: If you believe someone is experiencing an opioid overdose, call 911 immediately.
For questions about proper naloxone use, please consult a pharmacist, your healthcare provider, or visit the Department of Health website at https://www.pa.gov/agencies/health/programs/opioids/naloxone.html.
